Default Cruse Works Part Time

I bought a 2000 beetle for my 16 year old daughter, and the cruse control will work for awhile and then just quite's until you stop and turn the car off, when you restart the car it works fine for awhile again. Also noticed that the cruse light on the instrament panel never lights up. If anyone has any suggestions please help.

There probably isn't a light for your cruise. Seems to vary between years and models, but here's a thread on the same subject:
http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=227511

Someone mentioned it was added in '02

If you have access to someone with VCDS (Vag-Com) there's some quick tests that can't be run that show the status of all of the switched associated with the cruise control. There's the actual switch to turn it on, the set switch, brake switch and clutch switch (manual). I think some even have 2 switches to tell both up and down position of the pedal. In VCDS they are all grouped together in one line so it's easy to test.

Without it, you'd need to ohm out each one.

My '98 use to to do that and then after the brake switch recall it has not done it.

There is no "Cruise" dash light on my '98, '99 or '00T.

In case you may still have issues, I thought I'd offer my experience with that issue...... I had a burned out brake light. When the bulb was replaced cruise worked just like it should.

Daisy has had occassional cruise issues. I set the cruise and the car accelerates until I brake or is limited by the gear it's in. A couple weeks ago it didn't want to set the cruise so I pulled over, turned it off and then it worked. Crazy car! Brake light switch has been replaced.
