Question car drinking oil and check engine light comes on when below 64 degrees.

Bought car less than a year ago. Did great during the summer. When the temperature dropped my CEL came on and car started using about .75 quarts per 1500 miles. Recently the temperature has warmed outside and the CEL went away. Happens every time there is a drastic change in the weather. Any ideas?

Year? Mileage? Did you get the car scanned when the CEL came on? I know some of the early years ('98s and '99s) had oil consumption issues. I got lucky with mine, as she sips oil. But I know there are some issues with others.

only way to really know anyting is to find out what the CEL says and id do a compression check. if oil is going that fast by the rings it is time to re ring it

Don't get too shook up about it. That's a quart/2000 miles which is NOT an excessive consumption rate. 2.0s are known to use a little bit of oil.

Cool

Truhope07, are you using conventional motor oil? If so, at your next oil change, switch to Mobil1 (correct weight for your climate of course). I had the same issue with oil consumption. My VW service department manager suggested the switch and I haven't had that problem since (70,000 miles)
