Default Small Honking noise under hood

I have a 2001 turbo bug 2.0 It has an after market bov. When I'm really trying to move(accelerate) I noticed I get this noise of almost a weak fog horn sound from under my hood. I was going to replace the entire unit, but after reading some threads I was hoping some people can help me troubleshoot the problem.

First, make sure all the hoses and clams on the hoses going to the air box are tightly on and don't have a hole in them. Post a picture of the aftermarket air intake if you can, a picture says a 1000 words
The aftermarket intake on my NB makes a deep growl on "spirited" takeoff as the engine gulps in air, but nowhere near a fog horn.

Default Update

Here is some more information. It only has the whining/honking noise when I'm really trying to accelerate. I have attached photos as well. Thoughts?

Also I wanted to know how to clean my Neurospeed air filter.

Your noise could well be your engine wheezing. That's one dirty airfilter. I'm a newbee to the new Beetlem but I have a lot of experience in the off road world where filters take a beating. What is the Neuspeed made of? Foam? Auto Zone or Advance Auto should have a suitable solvent. First, if you have a shop vac, vacuum the outside of the filter. Then run the solvent through the neck of the Air Filter so that you are reversing the flow (inside to out). Once the dirt is pretty much removed, dip the filter in clean solvent to clean it as best you can. Be careful of scrubbing too vigorously, sometimes the foam takes it personally.

Let the filter dry and if Neuspeed recommends oiling up the filter, give it a light coat.

I know this sounds dumb, but look at your right side motor mounts. Make sure they are not sagging. I had a problem with a low growl when I was accelerating and it turned out to be broken motor mount bolts and the sound was the timing belt idler gear rubbing on the motor mount.

K&N makes a good filter cleaning kit. You can buy it in any automotive supply store. Follow the directions on the box. The filter you have looks just like mine. If it is just like mine inside, then once you take the big one off, you'll see a tiny filter behind it. Clean that too, it's part of the assembly.

Still have the sound. Going to purchase the cleaner and do that soon. Should help with MPG.

any way...does the noise change with engine RPM? only on start up or all the time?

It only starts when I'm trying to punch it. Like get some real speed going. I think I have a small pin point hole in my turbo. Not sure how to check that. Maybe I have a hole in one of my houses.

When you said you had a BOV I immediately thought some boost was leaking through the "horn", but that looks like a DV to me--I see nowhere on it in the pictures that would pass boost to the outside. I think you may have a leak somewhere in the DV though--does that one come apart? The Forge DV I had does and it could easily be inspected or rebuilt. If you're chipped perhaps you just need a little heavier spring in your DV? At any rate it sure sounds as if you a leaking a bit of boost somewhere. For the filter--get a K&N cleaning kit. Autozone used to sell that stuff, maybe they still do. Be careful not to over-oil the element, it can cause problems with your MAF.
