Default I need a starter

I Have a AEG 2.0L, where would the best place be to get a new starter, currently I was told from VW that they would have it rebuilt for 200.00 and it would only take a day? any other ideas, how much is a new one?

search around locally for places that will rebuild the starter for you. usually it takes a few hours give or take to rebuild it.

also, some places will sell you a rebuilt starter and you'll have to put down a deposit and then return your old starter as a core exchange.

pain in the ass to change the starter. I had to do it a a few month ago and luckily i had access to a garage with an in-ground pit. give yourself plenty of time to do the swap.

No, not at all. It consists of 2 screws, 3 hose clamps, 6 bolts and 2 nuts. Give or take.

Remove the air filter box, and the battery, and you'll have access to the starter.

Check Auto Parts in Canada! - OEM and Aftermarket Canada Auto Parts in Mississauga. They have lots of parts and they deliver next day :0) Prices are fair
Or here I need one too but it's gonna have to wait

Good luck!

I didn't realize you're from Waterloo! Waterloo must have the most New Beetle per capita in the world. Everyon's mothers and sisters drive a Beetle.

If you have the time... DIY! I think a shop quoted $300+ to put in a starter + rebuild, I can't remember the quote now. If you want to take it to the dealership go to Crosby VW, do not take it to VW Waterloo!

DIY: You'll have to remove the battery, lower slash guard to gain access to the bolts. I can send you some how-tos that I searched a few months ago.

I am usually around Kitchener/Waterloo on Saturdays, if you want some tip/help let me know, I can drop by and give you some pointers.

The place that I took the starter to get it rebuilt is just outside of Kitchener. Took 3-4 hours to do and the cost was around $120 with 1 year warranty. (I'll find out the name of the place and post it up later on today, the name escaped my brain)

Wow cool thanks!
I actually wish I had the cash now, I have the entire front end off, I'm putting the custom one back on tonight, finally get to drive again, it's been a long winter, woo whoo it started right away! (it still makes the eeeeck sound though)

What makes you think it needs replacing? If your car is a manual, the noise is likely normal. Clutch dust dirties up the bendix. You can remove and clean but it will return as time goes by.

These starters are pretty stout and they don't fail all that often. It is an annoyance but not one worth replacing a perfectly good starter.

Good point! If you have time and place to take the starter off, open it and clean it, you should do that, and save your self some money. Heck! I need to do the same thing, may be we can get together and do both bugs at once
Are you coming on Toronto New Beetle Club meet up on Sunday 24th? I would love to meet you and Finch.

Cheers

Winter is long if you have to fix the car during that time.

If you're looking for brakes your best bet is order from one of the online shops from the US and have them delivered to "CBIUSA" in Niagara Falls(US side).

This is the set I got, $189US shipped:
MJM Autohaus

same set would probably cost me $350 or so + tax here.

It'll be almost a year now. Brakes & pads are still good though I should service them again this summer, there is a very very light squeaking once in a while.

Had MJM ship the rotors & pads in 2 packages to CBIUSA. Items arrived on Friday and I picked it up on Saturday. They'll hold the items for a few weeks for you if you request them to. The guy I dealt with was very courteous and professional.

MJM was okay with me using my VISA card and shipping to CBIUSA's address. Some places don't allow you to do so.

I don't remember paying duty/taxes as the border guard didn't even bother asking me what I am bringing back (did some shopping in Buffalo as well since I was down there).

Wow thanks for all the replies
Yea I had to repair my front end this winter, redoing fibreglass and such, I'm happy now, just got it back onto the car tonight, just have to finish putting in all the hardware!
As for the brakes, I was going to pay 275 for rotors and pads, including installation, I thought that was a good deal considering its 380 at VW.

I'm probably at the point of needing a new starter. Mine sounds like it slips. Any ideas of what it could be? BTW, sorry for thread jacking

FYI...This thread is 3 years old, and the last time Petah was on here was in August of 2011.
