Default Water Pump and Timing Belt???????

I went to the VW dealer today and asked them about a timing belt and water pump and he told me that it would cost me about 800 to get it done. Is this a good price or is it tomuch. I mean the parts are not that much the timing belt is onlt like 80 and the water pump ( with metal impeller) is onlt 65. Does it take that much labor to change these out????? Am I getting played. I also have a proble with the air fuel mixture so that has to be fixed........Y did my step mom hae to buy it with out some one looking at it first........ please help me. I live in east TN just south of Knox, if any one knows some one cheaper and that does good work please let me know.

Thanks
Cooky.

there is a tensioner that will need replaced, along with all the motor mount bolts and the serpentine belt and coolant.

take a look at the kit that Metalmanparts sells for the 2.0 add one of their 1.5L bottles of coolant and then ask the dealership how much to change all of those parts.

$800 isnt horrible if they replace EVERYTHING from a dealership, but it can be done for cheaper.

perhaps post where you are from so we might be able to suggest someone to call to get it done BESIDES at the dealership.

That's a pretty good price as long as they replace all the tensioners and along the way.

It is one of the most crucial jobs most Beetle owners will have done.

Speaking with a VW Master Tech here in England it will be at least 3 hours work so if they charge you approx $120 an hour you're looking at $400+ then maybe $200+ for OE parts.

If all the work is done as advised above then an investment of $800 may be worth the money.

Best wishes, Ian

$800 at a VW dealer is an good price. Most of the ones I talked to want $1100-1300.

40 miles is not a long drive for a competent mechanic. TDI owners have been known to drive 400 miles if necessary.

Trusted TDI Mechanics - Google Maps

This is a link to a Trusted TDI Mechanics map. Not all are willing as some work on just TDI's, but most are more than capable of doing a gasser belt since they are so much easier.
