Default exhaust fumes

i drove the wifes 01 NB up on ramps today and im thinking the exhaust manifold gasket is leaking.

When idleing, im getting exhaust fumes inside the car enough to make your eyes burn. I had her hold a towel over the muffler and the only place i could smell exhaust fumes was around the manifold. I put my hand around the manifold and really couldnt feel any air blowing out but could smell it.

Is this a common problem with the 2.0's ? How difficult of a job to change out the gasket ? It doesnt look to bad. the car has 102k miles.

Same problem here. Funny because after changing out my booster hose which caused my hard brake pedal I originally had an air pump code on my check engine light. It went away after that fix so I thought maybe the vacuum line was the culprit. But now the air pump code came on again. The exhaust smell has been relevant for a while now so I'm also thinking manifold gasket. Both air pumps seem to be working fine with no obstructions.
Thinking that if I change those exhaust gaskets it may clear the code...
Hopefully they don't want an arm and a leg for it.
(edit) Didn't see this till now. I have the gas turbo engine.
