I replaced the front speakers in my '99 a few weeks ago. They were original...and entirely shot. I still had sound from them but I got a lot of buzzing. I'm sure my rear speakers are just as shot.
I would say its plausible you're speakers are dead, especially if they are original. You could also have wiring issues. I wouldn't think its the radio itself. I would say speakers or wiring.

Hello,
The front speakers went bad on my 00 a couple of years ago. I ended up replacing all of them with Polk Audio. It's an amazing difference. Although the car came loaded, the factory radio is not the greatest. I added the 6 cd changer in the trunk for more variety but it barely puts out any power. My 02 Jetta factory sound system is wonderful. The Monsoon with in-dash cd player has a 200w amp in the trunk and the sound quality is night and day between it and the Beetle. I do however feel the speaker replacement in the Beetle made a noticeable improvement.

Greetings,
Very true. There are speakers in the A pillars. Sorry, I didn't specify, in my application, the need was met in the door and the rear sides only. However, I'm sure if I replaced the A pillar speakers, a surround sound spectacular could very well be accomplished. Rudy ![]() |

As long as you get the right speaker size, you should be pretty good to go.
6.5" in the front and back. I replaced my fronts a few months ago and had to do some modding. But I had 5 and 1/4 inch speakers. Got some MB Quartz speakers in a deal for parts for our Jetta. But the local audio store had a perfect adapter for them we just had to drill some new holes in the door and we added some dynamat for sound quality. If you go to a good audio store, they should be able to tell you all you need to know. I got lucky, my local store, the owner does a lot of custom work with VWs (he's got a 20th GTI in the showroom and always has his New Beetle outside) so he knew exactly what I needed. ![]() |
