Default on off switch for electric fan?

can i run a manual switch for my electric fans? i figure i can splice in a switch easier than it would be to drain the coolant and everything to switch it out correctly and i would just swap it the right way once i had the funds/time

is it possible to do even or is that just crazy talk

What would be the purpose of this. Are your fans not turning on correctly? or are you just trying to get them on sooner?

have you run 12V to the fan motor to see if it is burned out or not.... I'd do that first. If the fan works, and it doesn't come on with A/C running, it is probably the fan control module (about $150 last time I priced one).

meinike said that they did and it worked just fine...so there is no way i can just run a manual switch to the fans and have a quick and easy fix for this temporarily?

Theoretically you could... but since our cars don't have a temp gauge, how would you know when to turn it on?

And to be honest, I wouldn't trust Meineke to diagnose a problem with a Radio Flyer wagon, much less our Beetles. So, I would do my own diag to be sure of what is actually broken.

I'd really check/replace the thermostat & fan control module before I started with the relays. The thermostat is known to be pretty poor quality and many owners have reported problems with them. Relays, on the other hand, rarely go out... and I've heard much fewer reports about them.

Start with common culprits, and work your way to the more essoteric... not the other way around.

If you run it all the time, especially in the winter, it'll probably run too cool - and since fuel trim is partially determined by coolant temp, you'll be runnning rich. Which can lead to all sorts of things like bad cats and poverty.

Fan control module is a stand along electrical component - like a little fan computer. So no coolant draining issues. Just unplug the old one, plug in the new one. I believe it is under the airbox somewhere. Maybe someone will post a diagram?

It is almost directly below the battery. Best to get to it from below.
