for some time now i have been reading on everyone's bug builds on the 8v AEG engines. sparking my interests of course i know wonder if i place any type of force induction on my 2.0 would i still pass a smog check and exam in the state of california. so basically did anyone have to remove any of the smog or emission controls from their car when the placed both the turbo or a supercharger on their cars? does anyone know if the nuespeed supercharger is C.A.R.B certified? main things i am looking for are emission controls and the evap sys on our cars. i learn more and more every day from this site and from workin on Betty. so now that i am thinking performance and keeping her a daily driver i have to check into the legal side of things and see what would and would not work. if anything a different exhaust, injectors, and a p-flo would be installed and leave everything else OEM. what do y'all think?

the s/c is carb iirc, the turbo kit isn't.

just do what i would: register her in a different state and build her up.

lol that is another way around that! i was looking at the different laws and what not looks like you can apply for a specially constructed vehicle and have the model year based on either body or by engine. you then have to take her to what is called a referee station to determine what emissions controls should be on the vehicle. if they cannot determine either then the most recent model year will apply. so for example my 1999 beetle could be re-registered as a 2009 beetle and i have to have all the 2009 emission control systems on the car. but if i get a certificate of sequence then the car could possibly be registered as 1960 which smog would not apply. only model years 1978 and newer have to have a smog check done. still tho seems like a lot of hassle just to build a fun lovin lil cup car! still will research it out for all of us stuck in cali and want to have a lil buggy sleeper!

I did remove my secondary air when I went turbo. It would be possible to retain the secondary air system but it would take a little fabricating to do so.

i am thinking what it would boil down to is to do all the work you want. when the new year starts be one of the 500 to register the car. apply for a letter of sequence which will re-register the car as a 1960 model year. once that happens she will be smog exempt forever. gotta love cal dmv, c.a.r.b., and the emission laws/green laws out here in cali.... or do what cheat says and register her back in missouri!!!!! lmao

now i have been looking at doing some basic mods that will keep everything on the legal CARB side without having to do all the above. looks like we can run a sportier cam (neuspeed with .429 lift and 256 duration), p-flo intake, p-chip upgrade, and different exhaust. thinking the magnaflow set up. has anyone run any of these or something similar? what results have you seen using one or more of those products? looking at spending approx 1500.00 for all the above. manufacturer states looking at increase 10 WHP for the cam, 5-8 whp with the intake, 5-7 whp with the chip and 10 whp with the exhaust. overall getting 30 whp without forced induction. what say everyone?

Hmmm.... 95whp + 30 = 125whp! Staggering! Really I wouldn't bother. Upgrade to an '01 or later 1.8T powered car, get APR DPP (prolly have 175-180 whp w/ just a chip) that you can set back to stock via your cruise control buttons for those nasty inspections.

yeah i know right! just trying to look at all options and keeping the car that is paid off. i mean really the best investment is a 2.0 turbo set up for the money spent in upgrades...like all other threads spend 6k get 300 whp... honestly for 1500 you can find the neuspeed sc used on ebay if you look and have patience but then you are looking at approx 150 whp while still being carb cert without going through the paperwork nightmare here in california. honestly i prob wont invest the money into upgrading the engine that much. ppl i know have been asking about rumors that beetles can churn out 300 whp.....the research bug has me and i just want to know all options for the 2.0 8v militia..... thanks for the input wawalker!!!!!

honestly VW isn't something i personally would sink 10,000 in engine upgrades for the performance you get out of it. too many other manufacturer's out there that if you spend the same amount you get monster's that can out perform any VW on the street, track, strip, and show. i just roll what's already paid for and looking at nifty upgrades that are CARB certified in california. its the state that makes all the really fun stuff for the VW not legal in the state to be licensed and road worthy.

nice joke tho, made me laugh
