Default Horrible knock after Overheating

I have a 99 2.0 and I've only had it on the road for 4 days. Today after driving about 30 miles it starts overheating and knocking ( worse on acceleration, but does it at idle too). Is my engine messed up? What could be wrong with it?

As the motor heats up the oil thins out. What do you think made the car overheat? Is the fluid level OK? When is started over heating was the coolant light flashing blue or red?

The light was flashing red. coolant was boiling in the reservoir. My fans are not coming on either. Could the knock just be the thinned oil???

How many miles on the car? Was your coolant level ok? Did you check your oil level?

Couple more questions... how far did you drive with the red light flashing?

does the car still start and run now?

how loud is this knock?

notice any oil in the coolant or vice-versa

fans are a possibility, so is the water pump...

good luck! keep posting!

I drove the car about 1/2 mile with the red light flashing. The car will still start, but it sounds horrible. I just replaced the water pump about a year ago, and I didn't start driving it until saturday.

sounds like a rod issue to me, too...

might have roasted the engine, unfortunately. i got lucky when my waterpump went and mine overheated. I stopped immediately, though.

Yep,i pulled over quick,,let her cool down every 3 minutes, made it home with no problems, thankfully.

Hell, rods can come out with the engine in place, other than coin, shoudnt be too huge of an issue.

I let it cool down and changed the oil (was due a change anyway). It isn't knocking anymore. I found my coolant leak too, the hose off the back of the throttle body popped off. ALSO, my timing belt is very loose. Where is the best place the get a new timing tensioner? I've already got the belt.

i just did all the work due to overheating. this is what you are looking at. the knock the the cam bending in its journals since its no longer in line. the head is warped hopefully not cracked. you will need to send it to someone. i sent mine to Frank's TDI by recommendation from users on here. replace all plastic parts i.e. coolant flange, therm houseing and them, maybe even some coolant hoses. i overheated my engine and drove 30 miles overheating. that is all i needed to do. the engine was not cooked. the rings were not cooked no rods bent since there was no contact between the piston and the valve. valves were good and cam was fine. if you keep driving eventually the cam will snap due to the stress then you will have a useless engine unless you replace all the guts top and bottom halves.

you can get an ultimate water pump kit from ECS tuning cost about 200...has water pump timing belt tensioner, therm, g12 coolant, cam seal, crank seal.

Will this tensioner work?

Car Part Wholesale - Auto Parts and Accessories Catalog - GMB Timing Belt Tensioner

It doesn't look like the one for my 2.0, but it does say image may vary from actual product.

So you replaced the water pump but not the timing belt? Or did you replace the belt and not the tensioner?

I'm curious.... I've never once seen boiling G12 coolant... Not saying it isn't possible, but I've never seen anything of that sort.

Just curious, but are you also using the Correct Coolant? The PINK VW G12 coolant? NOT the green stuff...

I've seen it when my coolant flange let go, of course then you loose the system pressure so you are back to the native boiling point....engine was fine afterwards though (once the flange and thermostat were replaced).

Only knocking I've ever heard from an overheated engine is pre-ignition from the hot cylinder head, I've never cooked one long enough to cause bearing damage.
