Default scan tool

I just bought the bently manual for my 2.0 gas beetle, now i am thinking about purchasing a scan tool. I do not have a laptop or internet access at home, so i was hoping that they make one that doesn't need a computer. Any suggestions?? Does it have to be the Vag Com?

I have seen several at Autozone that at some level would work, used one on my 2002 1.8t to reset a warning light. But none that I have seen will do "import" ABS codes and I am unsure if they will identify all VW codes correctly. (I saw one that even recommends the repair for the code) $60-$250..

It does not have to be VCDS (aka Vag Com); however if you are going to be your own mechanic, own more than one NB or you just want it done right the first time, then VCDS is the only way to go.

Do you want VCDS?

If so, go to Ross-Tech

If you go browse the site, it lets you know what you get with the full blown one, vs lite. Lite is probably fine for most. But it really depends on what you want to do with it. Just scanning and resetting? Lite is probably fine. Plan on tweaking a lot of settings and monitoring systems on the car, you'll want the full version. I have access to the full version, my FIL has it, and the shop we go to has it as well. I love having the full version, even though we don't really use much of the capabilities on it very often, its nice to have. If I were to personally buy it, I'd shell out for the full version.

I think there is a VAG-COM thread somewhere around here that explains more about the versions and connections.

Geniscan GS200 VAG Code Reader - Geniscan GS200 VAG Code Reader (),handheld scanner code reader from OBDCHINA

This is the one I have and it works perfectly for all codes including SRS, ABS, engine, and transmission codes. It also clears them as well.

There is also the one in my signature for $59.99 and it also does CEL, airbag lights, and a bunch of other things, specifically for VAG cars.
