1, Get it scanned by a VagCOM, Vw's specific code scanner that pulls Vw and Audi Codes.

2, Have you replaced the Spark Plugs and Coilpacks? If you have a 1.8T, the coilpacks can be changed at your local Vw Dealership for free.

3, Welcome to the org!

this is a 1998 it has a distributor. the other day it set out to change the plugs started with the one on the left looking into the engine compartment. autozone sold me autolights after removing the plug seen that they were ngk figured i would return the autolites and get the better plugs this is when this all started. plug wired are seated good dont know what else to check?

OK, do you have the old plugs? One thing would be to put those back in and see if it clears. The other point I would make is that the wires can be damaged by pulling on the wire when you remove them instead of the boot itself.

They can look fine but still be defective.

Change plugs (replace the originals for now)
Change the wires
Change the coil pack (what looks like a distributor)

No it doesn't but it does have a single coil pack and HT plug wires, it does NOT have coil packs like the 1.8T and isn't part of the recall.
