How long have you had the car? Ours showed problems the longer we had it and ran it. I would go ahead and do a bunch of preventative maintenence if it really did sit for that long. I know what ours was like after only 4 years.
I whole-heartedly agree...change the TB, don't take THAT chance.

mine is getting worked on as I get money. I have already replaced bushings on the shift linkage, replaced the left tie-rod ,and aligned it. I still need to to ball joints, oil change and a few other things. but seeing as this thread is about oil and filters. let us discuss this in my "rabbid rabbit" thread linked in my sig.

Yep, I have an Early AEG.

Trust me, when the previous owner complained of Oil Consumption, I noticed he was only using 5w30 valvoline dino oil.

I DID step up to Mobil 1 5w40 and it got it down to 1/2 quart burn off.

Thus switching over to Rotella T cheapened it and still has what it seems the same protection.

BTW, WIX as a cheap filter? Oh they are WAY better then the Frams out there. Every vehicle Ive purchased only used WIX filter products.

All I can say to that is step up to Mann, Bosch, OEM VW or K&N. This Beetle and VWs in general are unlike any car you have owned before. What works on American and Japanese cars doesn't necessarily work on these German cars. WIX is the official oil filter of NASCAR not Formula 1 afterall You could be getting more protection and better performance from your VW is all I am saying.

I did this same setup on my MK3. It did fine. Bosch is another brand I did use, but none of the auto places ever have my filter in stock. S'all good.

I think the general consensus is that an "inspection" can't tell you diddly (except if the belt is loose - did you check the tension?), but it is your call....

I recently had a Bosch burst on me. Thats why I switched to MANN or K&N. Just my preference, it wasnt on my car, it was a friends 01 Passat.

I have never even had a FRAM do that...

Back to the original topic of this thread: I just put it back together again. This time I modified head for improved oiling to top end. Also installed a Bosch oil filter and 20-50W oil (engine has 145K miles). Now it is very quiet and smooth running. But the previous owner dumped alot of stop leak in it and I suspect the radiator is plugged up. The engine comes up to temperature but both radiator hoses are cold along with the radiator. For you info, the head has been surfaced, new head gasket and bolts, new water pump (with metal impeller), timing belt and pulleys. One question: how do you get the radiator out of this thing? It is a 2000 Beetle with a 2.0 AEG.

Thanks, Don
