Default CEL not illuminating at startup

Hey guys, quick question.....2000 beetle, 2.0, auto.....went to get echeck today, didn't even notice No CEL at startup. Now I know it worked last year at this time (because of a MAF issue), but I don't drive the car daily, so never really noticed it NOT coming on.

I have searched a few posts, but nobody seems to say what the issue WAS. there are no engine issues (runs fine).

Any ideas.....because it is a LED, I doubt that it has "burned out".....not like the light has been on for 2 years.

If anyone has resolved this issue, any help would be appreciated!

Thanks

If you are indeed serious, take the car to be scanned to make sure there are no codes. Otherwise, just relax and enjoy the nothing wrongness

If I take the car for the emissions check, and they turn the key and see no "engine" light come on....they figure someone pulled the bulb out, and its an automatic fail!!!!!!

The car having codes is irrelevant.....I need to know if anyone has had an issue with the CEL not working at all. I cannot get the car passed if the "engine" engine light is not working properly..

Sooooo take the insterment cluster apart and replace the bulb,or find out why the CEL does not come-on @ start-up.... Research and investigate....

Well, I do not live in an emissions required area, and I did get a chuckle from the way worded your initial post, no malice intended.

Your reply to Fl_bug clarified what your problem is; so if I understand, this is what you mean... when you turn the key on but not starting the car, the self-diagnostics run, which means all the lights on the dash light up to show you they are working; unfortunately your CEL light is not lighting up.

How many other dash lights are not working?

They run a scan here in NY when you get it inspected. Although i too would want to know why that light isn't coming on, I doubt it would fail inspection with no codes showing.

Just throwing this out there, when i first bought my bug, no CEL .

Turns out it had 14 codes and the light was indeed supposed to be on!

One of the POs put electrical tape over the bulb of the CEL AND the airbag bulb, which was on too!

You should check that.

My hubby put electrical tape over his airbag light in his '95 Passat while he had it. He knew why it was on, but couldn't fix it, at least not himself. So the light was always on. Tape turned it off But he took it off before he sold the car. Also disclosed the problem as to why it was on.
