Check engine light coming on then off
My daughters 2000 beetle has had the several lights coming off and on and now it want start. The blue coolant light comes on then changes to the red flashing coolant light then turns blue again then goes off. Then 2 days ago the check engine light came on then went and back off. Now yesterday it started and went about 100 yards and shut off and want restart. Any clues no VW experts near by so trying to get an idea on the problem before I call a tow truck to take to local garage.

The flashin red temp light usally means low coolant, solid red is overheating. I'd check the coolant level first. And see if the coolant is pink (G-12). If it's full, the sensor might be going bad, there cheap to replace, around $10.
As for it dying and not restarting, you need to get the computer scanned first, and go from there.

Since you said no VW mechanics around, get this and it will help out a lot with figuring out whats going on. You can always sell if you get rid of the car.

You can go to an Autozone or equivalent and they will scan the codes for free.
