Default Transmission problem

Hi,

I have pasted the transmission warranty, last April, Now I have a DTC 17115 from my beetle. when I stop for the red light this evening, I noticed the panel shows I am still in Gear 5. I am not comfortable to Drive it now.

the transmission is not switch smooth between 1, 2 and 3, I can feel the pause when the gear is changed from time to time. unfortunately, I am not qualify for the recall for the extension warranty.

After scan my beetle, I have these code:

17978
17115
16955

The brake switch unit should be replaced, i would need to get a new one.

Should I need to have my Transmission fixed? any suggestion?

will it be clear out itself?

The 17978 code points to an immobilizer causing the car not to start. Not sure why that code is there if you are starting the car and driving.

17115/P0731 - Gear 1: Incorrect Ratio
Possible Causes

* Wiring and/or connections faulty
* Sensor Gear Position Indicator faulty
* Gear Solenoides faulty
* Mechanical failure

Possible Solutions

* Check wiring and connections
* Check Sensor Gear Position Indicator
* Check Gear Solenoides

The 16955 is the break light switch.

Not sure what exactly that second code means but I posted what the Ross-Tech wiki had to say on it (Ross-Tech Wiki).

If you were in 5th gear at a stop light the car would have died so I think its probably a cluster problem and wouldn't worry about not driving it.

As for the hard shifting, its the Transmission Valve Body and the way you can fix it is to go to Autozone and pick up a 11 dollar bottle of Lucas Oil Transmission Fix, put a half bottle in the transmission (as if you don't know how to) and it will shift smooth as it did before (coming from personal experience)

Thank you, I would give it a try, hopefully I can have my car on the road soon.

I have put my brake light switch back now, will get the Lucas Oil Transmission Fix tonight.

Lightbulb Transmission Issue

Hey Guys, Recently i also had a problem with my transmission the same one that everyone related here.
My car is a 2000 GLS Automatic 2.0.
Sometimes when you are driving the car roughly shift from the 2nd to the 3rd and never shift to the 4th.
Some other times it goes fine!
I went to the dealer they said the transmission was gone, need to be replaced even knowing i had my engine light on and the codes for the wiring of the speed sensor are on, they said the only way to fix it was replacing the transmission.
I take it to a transmission shop they take a ride on the car and once more the guy make me believe that my real problem was the transmission.
I didn't really could believe on that, so i bought myself an auto scanner and scanned my car.
I don't remember anymore the codes that came out but sensor speed and wiring speed sensor are the one related.
I reset the computer 4, 5 times and i had talked to some mechanics in New jersey and i found out that the beetle have a lot of computer problems related to the transmission.
Its been 4 months now that instead of paying 5.000.00 for a dealer fix my car i paid 200.00 for a scanner tool and had no more problems.
If somebody else have any more troubles about this let me know !! i will make a deeply research about this and be able to answer questions.

Did I miss something? I didn't read how you fixed the issue. I'm pretty sure the scanner didn't fix the issue.

I got out of that post that his car was stuck in limp mode, and resetting the codes when it won't shift fixes it for him. I suppose that works if your car stays stuck in limp mode.

I mean, was just the reset on the computer that actually did it.
I took the car to the mechanic that had the last maintenance in the car, he was surprise the problem was gone. i recently did the water pump and timing belt.
He told me about the transmission problem and today was gone !

does it work on a 2004? Turbo? I just bought mine 3 weeks ago, used, with 120,000 miles. I love her! But when I drive for about a half an hour at a constent speed, then slow down, and start to speed up again, from 2nd to 3rd gear it feels like someone has rammed into my back end.

the problem most of you have is that your transmission fluid is WAY past its useful life....

VW claims it is "lifetime" fluid...this is a farce....the fluid breaks down like any other oil and needs to be replaced....that should REALLY help with shifting problems...AND extend the life of your tranny (as opposed to damaging it due to crappy fluid)

talked to the vw dealer, they don't recommend it as it is a closed tranny, so what do I/we do? I called several other garages, and they all say take it to the dealer. (sigh)

That is a decent sized state, care to narrow it down a bit? I'm trying to point you in the direction of a good mechanic.
