Default Quick motor mount question -- need help!

Hi folks,

I'm trying to change the timing belt on a '03 2.0 with the AVH motor.

It looks like I should only need to remove the piece of the motor mount that attaches to the chassis and NOT have to mess with the inboard mount portion that's fastened to the engine.

Is that correct?

I appreciate the help as I can't find any DIY info on this engine type.

Can't say for sure on an AVH, but on the AEG you do need to remove the motor mounted piece. It really is no big deal at all, on a AEG it's only three bolts. The only trick is understanding that you have to raise and lower the engine a fair bit to expose the bolts. Also raising and lowering will help get the mount removed. By doing this I got a torque wrench on all three when I was putting it back together.

Thanks. I have the DIY write-up on the AEG motor and they don't appear to be similar, hence my question.

Anybody else have some insight? If not I guess I'll have to button things up and drive over to a shop and ask.

Sorry about that, I just read on the VW Vortex DIY where some of the guys had the worst time removing that mount and it wasn't clear to raise and lower the motor on a jack to ease the job.

I looked up the support bracket on a VW parts site and they show the same part for 1998-2005. Can you take a picture of it?

The top pic is the one I'm working on, the lower is from the Vortex DIY for the AEG motor. VWVortex.com - DIY: Timing Belt And Coolant Pump Replacement on 2.0 AEG! Pics Inside!

I could be smoking something but there seemed to be discrepancies from one to the other.

AFAIK all 2.0 gas NB engines use the same block and engine mounts, and yes the inner section bridges over the TB so needs to be removed to change the TB or WP.

Your pics show the same mount I have on my 2000 as far as I can tell.

Thanks for the pic, yup it's the same, what's throwing you is the power steering fluid reservoir in the DIY pics. My 2000 looks exactly like the pics of your car. It also uses the same kit for the water pump/timing belt job.

Here is a link to the side support part

One other thing I came across. In the pic of your car you can see the two rubber fuel hoes side by side (wrapped half way with a rubber cover) that go to the plastic fuel rail where the fuel pressure regulator is. For the life of me I couldn't get the quick disconnect fittings to release. I could get one but not all, I ended up removing the two lines at the regulator fittings. They came off pretty easy, but being a plastic hose barb made be a bit nervous.

I work around them, no need to disconnect.

Question How to get a good access to the engine mount?

How do you guys make space for TB job? I'm about to do it on 2002 AZG 2.0. I feel like I can get an access to engine mount bolts by just moving coolant expansion tank around a bit but I have no clue how to remove it from that tiny spot to make more room Should windshield fluid tank come off? It seems like too much work. Also What is the method to disconnect hoses shown with green arrows? Do I remove one-time use clamp or is there a way to disconnect plastic parts?

When you remove the motor mount and the timing belt covers they is a lot of room to work. Pulling the passenger wheel and the passenger side plastic splash guard thing if it is still there gives more room and you can see everything you need to. You will need new motor mount bolts are they are single use. No nee to remove the coolent resvior or washer tank.

Wheel and liner are already off.
I was confused by DIY guides for other VW vehicles on vwvortex. Though Bentley also doesn't mention coolant tank removal. But out of curiosity shall windshield washer fluid tank come off to remove coolant tank?

I just wonder about bolts. To play safe I ordered virtually all bolts I'm about to remove. The guy at the dealership was surprised as many of those (including some of 6 bolts mentioned at Bentley as "always replace") haven't ever been in their system so he had to explicitly add an order for them or something. When I was picking them up, another guy was also surprised as he said those I ordered were not stretch bolts as they were not greenish. The ones I have in the bracket are indeed of greenish tint. I doubled checked all p/n with ETKA. ETKA says only mount to body (N 105 167 02) is self-locking. Service guy at the dealership said they replace sometimes mount to engine bracket bolts (N 102 095 05 ?) only if the thread really looks bad. Also it looks like it would be hard to remove another bolt from mount side support with coolant tank around.

And what about fuel hoses?
