Default need second key made.

We only have the one key for the VW.
The dealer says for a valet key its
$50. for the key and $50. to program.
Is there another cheaper option? I tried
search and got nothing.

You can check ebay for the remote's but you will need to have them cut and reprogrammed.

Unfortunately, it seems that most locksmiths are not able to do these keys.

Dealer prices for the fob and key programmed are around $200, because of the type of key is not easy to find a locksmith to cut them and they are sometimes more than the dealer.
Valet key does not have to be programmed.

Its not just remote programming, but its also the immobilizer. You have to make sure the car recognizes the key.

You can try to get in touch with this guy: keys for vw volkswagen rabbit jetta golf fox passat corrado quantum replacement

He does all sorts of VW keys. Might be able to hook you up with a valet key cheaper. The info on his site is for remotes, but even if he can't do it, he can probably point you in a good direction of somewhere that can.
