Default New owner with question about MIL (CEL)

Hi,

I just bought a very low mileage 2004 from a relative. The Check Engine Light (referred to as a Malfunction Indicator Light in the manual) never goes out. The car seems to be running fine. She said that she was told by the dealer that it was nothing to worry about and that it will go out in a day or two....I'm thinking B.S.

Any suggestions?

Regards,

Bill

Go to an Autozone or equivalent and get the car scanned for codes. They should do it for free. Take note of the codes (should be something like pxxxx) and you can bring them back here. If the CEL is on, there is a reason. Fix the problem or the light will come back on without fail.

Ok, Code is P0354

Ignition coil 4 primary/secondary circuit
Open or short circuit condition

Probable cause

Poor electrical connection
Faulty Spark Plug
Faulty ignition coil

Edit: After doing some research and talking with previous owner, I'm reasonably certain that this is due to a known issue with an improper ground on coil #4. I saw mention of a TSB for this. Does anyone have a link?

There was a recall on all coil plugs but Im not sure if it covered 2004 or not.

Coil recall was only for the 1.8T. Haven't heard of one for the 2.0.

2.0L cars only have one coil pack for the 4 spark plugs, instead of the individual packs in the 1.8T, one for each spark plug.

You were right, BS. CEL lights go away, but the problems don't!
