Default Speedo is WAY off....

I had a cop flash his blue lights at me the other day. I looked at my speedo and it's reading 46 mph. The road is marked 45mph. So, I got a GPS app for my Iphone and checked the car. My speedo is at 55 and the GPS says I'm going 63mph.
So I doubled checked with other cars and the GPS is right on with the other cars.
Today I went out and measured my tires on my car. They measure 24.75". Factory tires are 24.5".So what gives?
Any ideas how to correct this? A lot of people from my work call me speedy, and I couldn't understand why they were calling me that. Now I know. After all, I thought I was doing the speed limit!

Very strange, usually the speedo says you are faster than you really are!!
What size are the tires? It's the rolling radius that counts for the speedo.

Ok. Did some research...

VW NB common sizes- 205/60/15 are 24.7" and 205/55/16 are 24.9"
My tires spec at 25.4"

I don't think 1/2" is going to changed the speedo by 8mph.

I'm running 225/40zr18's and I actually think that mine is pretty much right on now. I had a gps for my 3100 mile trip to the Tail and Florida and back and I am pretty much spot on as far as speed goes. My mileage to work has gone down a little though. Nice calculator. My setup is only 0.2" difference.

I wish mine was only 2.1% out. Mine is a whopping 15.5% out. I just can't figure out why.

Gary must've put something extra in it.

I like the speed sensor idea.

Hope you get it sorted out.

I think I've found the problem. My needle on my speedo falls down onto my gas gauge when sitting still. It's over a 1/2" below the "0" mark. Any ideas ?

Default Update

Ok finally figured it out. Somebody took the speedo apart and put it back together wrong. They must of had a different speedo face on it and kept it or sold it before I got the car. The speedo was off the same at 30 mph and at 60 mph. To repair it, I took off the needle and turned on the ignition and replaced needle at zero with speedo energized. Now according to my GPS I'm only 1 mph off at all speeds.
