Yes, i did once own a GM vehicle; a '95 I think it was. It all seems like a bad dream... Anyway, there was a method (pump the brake 3 times, count to 6, turn the key, hold your breath, and count the number of flashes, search the web to find the meaning.)I now love/hate a new to me 2001 2.0 5spd bought at a used car dealership. Within days the airbag light came on. I dont know why, but it doesn't affect performance, so I am ignoring for now. Then what I think is a failing axle turns out to be a broken motor mount. The AC tends to get confused and thinks its a blast furnace, but then remembers its an AC...WTF? Now a check engine light...no noticeable impact on performance. Do I need a special gadget to get codes? Is there a way to reset the alarm to see if it was a fluke, or maybe fixed? What is the the best Bible or WWW on these bugs to buy, chilton or other?

To check what your engine light is on for, any obd-ii scanner will work, but to also get to the airbag light, you're going to need a vag-com cable. Put your information in, and maybe there is someone local who has one that can scan it for you.

As for a repair manual, everyone swears by the one made by Bentley publishing... including me. I have one for every vw product i have owned, they are really worth every penny if you are planning on doing all the work yourself.

Default Info for local code read...

Thanks.!.!
a Bentley it is...
I had a BMW that after engine lite went on went into "limp home" mode, eventually stranding the car. Am I at risk of this happening to the bug? Can you tell me the downside of ignoring broken motor mount?

Portland OR

Thanks again...

Portland? There are places to get the codes checked, and good independant VW shops.

Good luck to you!
