Default Replacing AC Low side service port

I have a 1999 2.0L Beetle. I was checking my AC with a set of gauges. When I removed the low side connector the low side valve was leaking. I could not stop the leak, now I will have to replace the low valve. Does any one know how to remove the low side valve correctly. And what is the approximate cost for the part. A friend of mines says he will vaccum and fill the system

IIRC it just unscrews. If it does not you will have to replace the entire low side line. Just remember if your system has been discharged for more than 24 hours you MUST replace the receiver dryer.
