Question Coolant Leaking (driver side engine bay)

Hi!

Drivers side engine bay has lots of visible coolant. Vehicle had recently overheated and a TB and WP are being considered. The 99 2.0L beetle had it changed at 70k, and it is now at 120k.

Inspection of the timing belt: looks fine. Also, no leaking found around the water pump. However, I cannot verify that the water pump has the much needed metal parts within.

I am leaning towards a coolant flange and O ring replacement to stop the leaking on the drivers side of the engine bay. Are there some good DIY's on this? Also, what about the leaking seen in the following images--perhaps there is a much larger problem?

Lastly, I was concerned about how much coolant came out when it was drained ( front drivers side, ahead of the block ). Only 3-4 cups came out, yet the coolant reservoir had indicated it was full at the time.

Thank you for the thoughts,
Jessica

Its your coolant heart valve leaking.

Check out this thread.

Also, its good to buy a jug of the r12 coolant from the dealership (its $20) and just fill it when it drains down because you will have some air in the lines no doubt

G12, not R12. R12 is refrigerant

Thank you for the replies.

The flange is off, however it was forced off, there is an anomalous metal black hose in the way. The black house runs all the way around the engine and the DIY did not mention this. It appears to be quite a project to get it off.

Here is a picture describing the issue:

You can see the broken bracket from my prying. This picture also looks as if the bracket has a screw to remove it? This would allow the top portion of the flange to fit against the engine.

I would assume there is a work around to this black metal hose.

(G15 coolant was acquired).

Thanks again,
Jessica

black bar removed, going to add a DYI for this operation, distributor and this black bar must be removed in order to complete the job ( half way there ).

Has anyone done this before? All progress is halted, the black metal pipe won't fit back into the engine. I am reasoning this is because I don't have the correct leverage.

I know this sounds weird but are you sure its a 2.0 engine? I cant place where that tube is in the engine, is the picture upside down?

As for the screw, it looks like the flange got stuck on the bolt that screws into the engine bay, you can unscrew it and go to an auto parts store and replace it with one of the same size or unscrew it and try to get the flange bracket off, either or will work.

This is definitely a 2.0L ( double checked )- removed some more parts and might have it back in.
