Default Coolant leak

Try The coolant flange on the engine head sid, apparently the sealant rings can go bad in the sensors or even the bigger one between the engine and the flange itself.

The plastic flange on the rear of the head is notorious for warping, and cracking.
When replacing it be sure to replace all the O rings.

I just bought my 98 beetle...replaced lower radiator hose due to a very small hole...I didn't put it back on right and it wore a hole in day of driving just above the oil filter. Check your hose!!!

Manual or automatic transmission. If its an automatic check the trasmission cooler. It's a square or round "thing" with 2 1 inch black hoses coming out of it. it will be on the to of trasmission when you look down on it from the engine compartment. Sorry I don't have a picture as its raining today and the beetles not in the garage. If its a manual I would pressure test the cooling system to help locate the leak
