Oil Cap Cover - Broken

Requesting some information folks! This morning my hubby was filling up my windsheild washer fluid and noticed that the oil cover was just sitting on top of the pipe or tube. Upon inspection it looks like the treads on the oil cap are screwed in and it appears that the threaded piece the actual cover screws into has become detached from the pipe or tube. We are wondering what part(s) we would need to have this repaired. The car just had a oil change 2 weeks ago and although we cannot say for sure we are left wondering if this was broken at the shop at the time of the oil change. No much we can do at this point other than to see if we can get it repaired. Would appreciate your help if you can tell us what parts we should be looking for.

Well of course the shop that did the change broke it, it didn't break itself, but it may have not been their fault actually (stuck, already cracked, etc). But it certainly should have been brought to your attention. Call them up or go by and tactfully ask them how they are going to handle it, free oil change, what? Probably going to be a dealer part, or they are available at www.ECSTuning.com and numerous other online VW parts dealers and resellers.

Hope your oil change place used the proper VW spec oil, most don't carry it.

Oil Cap or Oil Filler Cap, here's one, not OEM, but...

You may also have to purchase a new gasket separately if it doesn't come with it. Verify.

I am maybe not explaining properly. It's not the cover that we need. Its what ever the cover screws into. We can just physically lift the cover without even unscrewing it and then once its in your hand we can unscrew from the threaded piece. So I guess maybe the proper question is what is that threaded piece called?

From the diagram we are holding # 30 and 17 or 31 in our hand and can twist off either 17 or 31. It looks likeit may be # 25 and 26 that we need to replace so the cap will screw in. Are we right and if so what are these parts called?

Just take part numbers to VW Dealer and they will give you them (for a price) I wouldn't get your mechanic to fit them though, i'd find another who looks after Bug's better

By the Bentley, My pic of the '98 AEG sure looks different than yours.

Digging a little deeper, apparently your going to have to figure out which one is yours. The one Blugg put up is the Steel Cylinder Head Cover, this grawing is for the Aluminum Cylinder Head Cover. Bentley shows both for the 2.0 AEG, and doesn't differentiate which was used when.

WOW, #24 is the Valve Cover. That piece will be expensive since you also need a new gasket and it is time consuming to replace. Are you sure you need a New Valve Cover? That thing is usually Aluminium and it shouldn't get that easily screwed up at the section where the Oil fillter cap screws in.
On the 1.8 Motor there is a plastic tube that screws into the Valve cover gasket and then the Oil filler cap screws into that but that doesn't seem to be the case in the 2.0 engine.

Okay, the diagram that Blugg posted on Post #7 looks a bit different and it also shows a Breather Assembly or a part that screws into the Valve cover gasket and then is capped off by
the Oil filler cap. On MORAV's post #16 it doesn't show it. So if all you need is a Breather Assembly that wouldn't be so bad but if you need a Valve Cover then it is going to get

Okay, the Valve Cover is actually only about $30.00 bucks plus another 23 or so for the gasket. Here is a link that shows the diagram of the 1998-2000 2.0l engine and parts associated with it.

Sorry, my capture program won't scroll in the Bentley and I have to capture in screen sections, didn't go beyond what was up thinking all was there you needed. Rest is posted up now. #24 is just a bolt. As I also added to the post, either drawing could be applicable, depending on which head you have.

Let us know which one it is, and Blugg can put up the p/n's if need be. My parts diagram site is down.
