Hit fellow orger "D2Beetle" with a PM. I think He did a DIY on this.

By the book, which may include some information a "DIY" or "How-to" may not...

I sort of did a DIY; it was my first big maintenance issue. Here is the thread for my '98 Cylinder Head Project.

To you people who removed the head. where did you remove the exhaust? manifold or did you leave manifold on ? how do you remove the shield to access the top bolts? Thanks

I disconnected the down pipe from the exhaust manifold. You can actually reach all four bolts from topside. The head, exhaust manifold and shield all come out as a unit.

I suppose that if you really had to, you could remove the exhaust manifold by first removing the shield (four allen-head bolts, if I recall, across the top of the shield). This would allow you access to the exhaust manifold bolts.
