Question Idle RACES as high as 3,000

My daughter's 04 NB has started to have an idle problem.
It will often start and immediately race to 2500 or 3000.
You can rev it higher but it won't drop down to normal for several moments.

If you try and put it in gear at the higher rpms, it will often stall.

Searched but did not find anything about this.

Any help would be appreciated.

Is there any codes?
First guess is that you have a vacuum leak or a vacuum hose not connected. Anyway there are many possibilities. Diagnose is not that difficult if you have VAG-COM.

Enter engine, measurement block(08), then 098(I remember, might be 096) you can see the throttle position. Start engine then look at the number. Typically it shouldn't be over 15% at idle. If you see it too high then try clean throttle and see if the throttle cable is stuck. If not then it's a vacuum leak. Check vacuum hoses.

Do the above but just quickly check the throttle pedal isn't caught or sticking first....

Thanks.

I'll try and locate the throttle linkage and lubricate.
Also I'll see if the pedal needs attention.

Any other dyi before involving the dealer?

thanks

Uh.....does the '04 NB have a throttle cable or linkage?!? My '02 is drive by wire throttle. The pedal can stick, but there's no mechanical linkage to the throttle.

Not sure. For electronic throttles it can be stucked too due to too much carb deposit.

But if the pedal sticks it will still signal the throttle to stay opened.

Default Not the Pedal or Cable

Well, pedal is not sticking, it returns to the top totally.

No linkage, the 04 is a "by wire" throttle.

Going to have the dealer look at it tomorrow.

I'm thinking that a cleaning of the throttle body would likely do the trick -- But if it's something electrical, I won't have a clue.

Thanks

Yes, yes....but I was referring to the OP's comment that he would "try and find the throttle linkage and lubricate."

He DID need to check the pedal, as I also stated, and he has done so.

Cool, I read your post that you thought a sticking pedal couldn't cause the issue.
