That light deals with oil pressure.

How often are you doing oil changes? How long has this been happening?

Check your oil pump. We don't have a low oil level indicator. So when the oil light comes on it means low oil pressure. Not a good thing. What type of oil are you running in the car and how many miles on the engine?

I just changed oil & filter, I change it every 3000-3500 miles also just saw they put in 10-30 usually 5-30 would that be the problem with flow. Car has 167,000

That doesn't sound like VW 502 or 505 recommended oil. You really should be running 5W40 Castrol Edge Synthetic. That is what most dealers put in it. Or you can also use MOBIL One 0W40 Full Synthetic which is also approved. I wouldn't put a NON-Synthetic in your 1.8 engine. These engines run very HOT and need a good MotorOil to prevent sludge or other issues.
I don't even think that 10W30 is a Synthetic.
No need to change your oil every 3000-3500 miles. I change mine every 5000 miles but I do use a recommended Synthetic OIl!

Really doesn't matter. The oil requirements are still the same.

Does the light go out at idle? It might be possible the pick up screen is getting clogged. As the engine speeds up, more oil flow is produced and more oil is drawn up through the pick up tube/screen. Resistance creates pressure, so if the light is out at idle, not a pressure problem, a flow problem. If you had a pressure problem the light would be on at idle and go out as the motor speeds up.
Good luck, and keep us up to date on what you find.

Find a reliable mechanic, hook up a MECHANIC OIL PRESSURE GAUGE and watch the oil pressure at idle, 3000rpm and 6000rpm. Compare the result with the specification in service manual. If the pressure is fine then your oil pressure sender is probably faulty. If the pressure is off the specification too much then I would go directly with an engine rebuild.
