Give it time with a new car. They all have their own personalities when it comes to how they prefer to be driven for optimal mileage.
That's the trick. You have to get into 5th asap. I even skip un-needed gears at times. I always shift before 3k RPMs and I've gotten close to 35 MPG. If you drive conservatively and shift right, you can get great mileage. Too bad for the automatic folks though..lol.

Our Bug is auto, and it is pretty hard to keep revs under 3k. I've tried to reset tranny computer by turning ignition on, and holding gas pedal for 10 seconds.

Default 1999 mpg

I typically get around 29/30 mpg as I drive 100 mile round trip a day, City/Highway. I do skip 4th gear and move into 5th asap and my speed is around 60/70mph.

I was talking with a guy and he said his turbo get's horrible gas millage, I think it was an automatic.

We have an '06 TDI DSG and an '02 2.0 auto.

Both of them SUCK as far as mileage goes. The '02 averages about 22; the TDI gets about 35.

I gained a whopping 5mpg by getting rid of a '93 Taurus 3.0V6 that got 30mpg. PMO every time I think about it.

Then he probably wasn't using premium gas. I get about 30-32 mostly highway NOT driving like an old lady
