My mileage has been amazing lately. I'm now up to 33 MPG around town! I don't do much highway so I can't say but.....considering a 4 cyl Nissan Altima gets 32 HWY, I must be in the very high 30s. Gotta love this car for fuel consumption.
If you had the automatic, you'd be getting less mileage. I love VWs 5 spds though.

i know i'd get slightly worse mileage, but i've owned so many manual cars...actually i've only had one automatic ever, but i miss lazily cruising around. i also wanna put a ratchet shifter in my next car the beetle got fresh oil the other day, the gas needle has been moving a little slower so hopefully we can break the 32-33mpg mark this tank /crosses fingers

I will tell you too that my mileage went up when I switched to Mobil1 full synthetic. But the biggest reason, I think, for the great mileage is shifting before 3k RPM and, when possible, I skip gears...like going from 3rd to 5th etc.

we've been driving the car a lot the past few weeks, moved about 70 miles away. the last few tanks have been around 32mpg w/o using a lot of cruise control and with large loads. i hate interstate driving because 70 is 3500 rpm which just seems silly to me. we had to borrow a truck to get the furniture (yay auto-it felt so good to be so lazy!) and 70mph was about 2300rpm and i was so jealous!! it's too bad we're living in the bigger city now, because i'm positive gas mileage is going to suffer

cars always get their best mileage after an oil change, synthetic or not. i don't think skipping gears is that useful, but i keep the beetle under 2k by using all 5 gears hehe

In 2.0 NA Beetle, we just went under half tank, with about 130 miles on it... Not very good...I don't know MPG, cause we boughjt car week ago
My 2.0 turbo, 285 HP WRX is getting 23 MPG, with moderate heavy foot
I was expecting more than that from smaller and lighter Beetle...

The New Beetle tips the scale @~ 2700 Lb.
http://consumerguideauto.howstuffwor...w-beetle-4.htm

And the Subaru weighs in @2950 Lb or so, assuming I have the right model.
http://consumerguideauto.howstuffwor...-impreza-4.htm

So, the difference in weight is negligible.

There says weight is 3085 lbs.

Plus WRX is AWD too, so anyway, I would expect Beetle to be better.

Don't get me wrong tho, don't want to start any argument.
Just sharing thoughts

Skipping gears can make a huge difference. That's how the pros all do it when trying to get the best mileage...and I'm obviously proof that it works. You always want to get to the highest gear as fast as possible. Skipping un-needed gears will help do that. As for oil changes, not sure where you got that info from but, synthetics have always been proven best for helping reduce friction which in turn helps fuel mileage.

You can't just say you got 130 miles from half a tank. That's telling you nothing. You have to divide the gallons used into the miles driven. And you also have to do it over time....say a few tanks, to get a true average.
I would suggest you do a good oil change and tune up on er' and then see how she does. You don't know how it was taken care of by the last owner.

I just changed fuel filter, air filter is new. Synthetic Castrol comes next, this week.
I know half tank is not good measure but makes me wonder...

I have found that the 5 spds mileage is a bit better than the auto but 18 MPG sounds way too low to me. I've never gotten less than 27 or 28 MPG and as high as 35. I have an 01 with only 48k miles on it but I changed the belt, plugs, water pump, wires and all filters.I did this at around 45k just for the hell of it and it made a difference. I also had to replace a few of the infamous vaccuum hoses Beetles are so famous for going through.

Hey, just quick question:
Is GLS engine SOHC or DOHC? And how much power does it make?

GLS is a trim level. The 2.0L engine puts out 115hp.

i did a rough calculation on my first tank, i didn't know i had to hold in the button to reset the trip, i was just pressing it and thought it was broken until my VW tech friend clued me in

sooo, if i recalled the correct mileage when i filled it up, it worked out to about 23 MPG. seems horrible, that's with a good amount of highway driving too. i'm hoping i was just getting used to the insanely high clutch and this time around will be better. i figured i'd be getting more like 28 MPG.

After first tank looks like we are getting something more like 20 MPG... I'll see what happens after 2-3 tanks...
I'm thinking that spark plug/oil/cleaning MAF/ may improove it a bit. I'll do it some time soon.

My first tank in my NB was 20mpg. Sucked big time. HOWEVER, it had also been 9 years since I had driven a stick. This week when I went up to Kentucky & puttered around Louisville I got home and calculated 30mpg. By then I had stopped firing her all the up to 3500rpm before shifting. Now I am always below 3k.

Give it time with a new car. They all have their own personalities when it comes to how they prefer to be driven for optimal mileage.
