if you look on the airbox on the driver side near the back of the engine bay, it is where the 2.75" crinkle tube from the engine meets the airbox. You will see two bolts that hold it to the airbox and a spring clamp holding the tube to the other end. There should be a wiring harness plugging into the side of it.

This question ought to make you laugh but... do all beetles have maf's or just turbocharged beetles.

all. in short, the MAF is a sensor that calculates that amount of air flowing into the engine. It then uses this measurment to calculate the time the injector is open, in turn how much fuel is injected into the engine.

this is the reason why if your MAF goes, you will start throwing lean or rich codes.

I am going to be replacing the MAF on my 98 2.0 this weekend and I do not want to buy the special lobe bit in order to remove the two screws holding it.

Can anbody offer me some advice on how to remove these two screws holding the MAF without damaging them or do I have to buy the special bit?

Thanks

You don't need a special bit...unless the gas engine MAF is different than the diesel engine MAF. Literally I did mine in the dealership parking lot with 2 borrowed tools...a tiny flat head screwdriver and some needle nose pliers. Prolly wouldn't suggest using the same 2 tools . The hardest part was the clamp keeping the big air hose on. I wish I was at home and had my hose clamp pliers to hold them open. It took me forever to get the needle nose pliers to work.

Anyway...shouldn't be too tough for even a beginner mechanic.
