Default engine noise

Hi I have a 99 beetle with the 2.0l 4cyl 75k miles and i have a very loud ticking noise (tick tick tick) from the engine. Hot or cold and it is engine speed related. I keep up on my oil changes, what could this noise be? someone told me it mught have to do with the valves? Thanks

I would chek my oil level first even between oil changes, these engines tend to eat up some oil. Worst case, the sound can be coming from the valve terrain. Not sure how it is on the 2.0, but on my old Jetta the timing was off so I just had the distributor adjusted. I'm sure some one here will fill you in more.

The oil is at the proper level. I use 5W30 and am always topping it off because it does burn a little bit of oil.

I'd have your timing belt checked. 75k is a bit early for a 2.0, I did mine at 83k, they say the belts last for 100k.. but ya never know with age.

I just had the water pump replaced the VW dealer said the timing belt didnt need to be replaced, could that be causing the noise...the work they did?

I have the exact same problem right now. I'm at 105,000kms with a brand new timing belt and water pump. The ticking sound increases with speed. The oil level is fine and just got an oil change.
Anyone have any advice?
