Default 25,000 miles and new rear brakes

My mother has a 01. She lives down in Socal. So I called the local dealer and set up an appointment. She only has 25K on her car. So they were going to replace the oil and filter, coolant and do a brake flush. I have her go in every six months for a oil and filter change. She calls me from the dealer and said they told her that she needs new rotors and pads for the rear.

I have owned three VW's in the last six years. I know that the Mk4's have a 80/20 brake usage. The only thing I could think of is. She lives in a city were there are tons of dips in the road. It doesn't have below ground sewer systems. So every intersection has dips in them. She also does 90% city driving.

I told her to read off the invoice. They charged retail for the parts. I already looked up the part prices on Parts.com. The local VW dealers near me jack up the prices on their parts. She asked for the parts back. She said there were grooves in the rotors. She also remembers hearing the brakes grind when she pulls out of the driveway, but she didn't think anything about it.

Has anybody replace their rear pads around 25,000 miles?

Well.... ya. A lot of us have and some of us a lot sooner than that.

My first set were replaced around 12,500 miles... next set around 24,000. I replaced those with zimmerman rotors and ebc greenstuff pads. I now have 39,000 miles on those brakes and they still look great.

I replaced the fronts at or around 24,000ish miles with the zimmerman rotors and greenstuff pads there was still about 90% of thier life left and put them on a freinds bug with ultra high miles. They are still using them as far as I know.

The front pads are much thicker than the rears and have much more surface area. They are also made from a much harder compound. So even though they do much more of the braking they will out last the much thinner and softer rear brakes.
