A lot of us TDI folk use the oil extractor because we have filters that are accessible only from the engine bay. There are some that have an aftermarket skid plate to protect the oil pan - if you don't have a hole cut in for the drain plug you can do everything from the engine bay rather than getting under the car.
Have heard of some people with the skid plate and a hole cut to get to the filter, but that still requires getting under your car.
