LOUD engine start up

My 07 beetle is awesome....except for one thing. When I first start up the car, well the engine is really loud. After about 20 or 30 seconds, the engine quiets down and idles lower.

Does anyone else notice this about their 2.5? Before I go and spend an entire day at VW.

It sounds like it's probably your secondary air pump. If it is, then it's normal. The noise is the air pump adding more air to the engine to reduce startup emissions. If you went under the hood, it would sound like a small vacuum cleaner.

I know that my '98 idles at about 1-1.2 for under a minute, and then decreases its rpm's to about .92 but yours is a different engine, so

It's normal. There are several threads about this already (though I can't find the links!) and it is normal for EVERY 2.5, not unique to the beetle. I'm glad you like the New Beetle so far!

Our '06 is noisy also right at startup. But once the little blue temp. light goes out, it seems to quiet right down!

When the blue light goes out the car is warmed up

Did you guys know that they did away with the blue light for '07? Ya, it threw me for a loop!

Yea my gf car does it. sounds like vacuum pump like they said. Nothing to worry about...

It is perfectly normal, and the five cylinder volvos do the same thing.

I picked up my '07 NB Vert two weeks ago and my salesman told me about the leetle blue light as well.....I kept looking for that leetle blue light...it is NO longer there on the '07 NBs. I will have to inform him of this when I go back for my 1000 miles fix ups.

because that is exactly happened to my 2006 NB this morning.
when i start..
it engine sound very loud for about 5 seconds..and quit down.
i was so worry that something is wrong..but now i know why, this forum rocks!!!

I know this is an old topic but I just starting coming into the 2.5 forum. The high rev on start up is part of the emissions equipment. It allows the catalytic converter and sensors to warm up quicker thus causing less emissions.

Thanks for clearing that up - it's not really that the engine runs loud - just reved up. It stops when I put the car into
1st or tap the gas - and yes, the lack of a warm up light threw me for a loop too.

Sorry for resurrecting this old thread I din't want to start a new one but I can't help notice the 2.5L is pretty noisy

start up in my tiny 1 car garage (top down of course ...) it's like an echo chamber of engine palooza, one time I'm pulling out the alley and just tapping on the gas the engine roared... (keep in mind I'm the nicest guy u'll ever meet ) but I spooked some bystanders like I was gunning for them with road rage

My neighbor's 2.5 Jetta is noisy too in the alley. Finally a friend drove my nbc and I could hear it come around the corner before seeing it. Even warmed up the motor is noisy

Thanks from me too! I was wondering why it was so loud myself. When I put it into R I expect it to lunge or jerk as it races so hard but it's all good eh?


I too was ready to go to VW yesterday. The 2.0's don't act like this.

as long it's not rattling or pinging and the mileage stays "ok" then I'm ok with the noise.

however...

I'm also detecting some steering wheel vibration, it's very slight but noticable, and this happens when the engine is warm... my car still pretty new, only 850 miles, maybe these 'bugs' will work themselves out

I'm having the opposite problem--I can barely hear when I'm starting the engine! After it gets started, yes it is very loud and violent for a few seconds, as noted by several above. But actually starting it, I can barely hear it.

I think it's partially due to the fireblanket on the inside of the hood, which my 98 did not have.

If you don't want the car to lunge when you put it into R, wait for about 15-20 seconds after you start it and the RPM should lower by quite a bit. Watch your tach and just wait for it to drop. All the mechanical "noise" will settle down too. Give it a try and see if it helps. It never hurts to get the juices going through the engine and a little heat before you blast off.

I noticed my 06 makes that loud noise on a cold start too. Having had a TDI previously, I didn't really think much obout it, but it freaked hubby out the first time he heard it. Very glad to know it's a normal occurence.
