Default First Oil Change DONE DIY

Well, the first oil change is now done. I put in Castrol Syntech 5W40. I found the filter drain tool on the web for a good price and it made the change a snap. The worst part is pulling the access panel in order to get at the drain plug for the crankcase. This one is definitely not as easy as either of our Subaru's but I just was not going to pay someone to do an oil change after all these years.

Thanks again for the hints and suggestions.

Dan

I've done my own maintenance on more vehicles for more years than I can count. And unless you REALLY enjoy crawling under a hot motor, I can't imagine not using a Pela oil extractor (http://www.jerrybleach.com/pelaapplications.html). It makes changes simple, clean and much easier to dispose of the used oil.

Sure, I don't have to ramp the car, drop the Panzer Plate, spill oil all over the place, or get dirty fingernails. Oh well, I can do without all that.

Do yourself a favor and get a Pela or other oil extractor pump. You'll never go back to groping around for the drain plug again.

Love the name PANZER PLATE. I'd like to meet the Black Forest genius that thought up the 15 fastners to hold it in place.

Danbike,
Where did you get the drain tool at? I haven't seen any inexpensive ones yet.

Low cost is relative. The VW dealer quoted me around $200. I found it at one site for $150 and bought it for $60.

Fumoto makes a badass drain valve.

Fram makes one as well. Both should be available for under $65.

What the hell? Are you filters canister style now? as opposed to the um one-piece filter?

(sorry, new to 22.5's)

Yup, the oil filter on the 2.5 lt engine is a cartridge that goes in to a cannister. Talk about old fashioned!!

the old ways are the best ways sometimes. Look how much waste these 'single unit' type deals make.

Neat, thanks for the info.

auburn's pretty far; you'll probably eat up the $100 in fuel just to get there and back...

Me too. I'd give him $20 and a burrito.

If you think I work for burritos you are a bit mistaken. Make that a bottle of Veuve Cliquot and I might start thinking about it. Make it a case and bring your car here and it is a deal.

And to think I just used a screwdriver... (Yes folks, the 2.0 TFSI has the same canister oil filter housing.)

I also used a axle nut socket to remove the housing... I believe it's 36mm (will need to use it again soon...).

Default Oil Filter Housing

If It Is A 36mm- It Is The Same As The Oil Filter Cap On A Bmw-autozone Had A 36mm Socket.
