Default 2.5 oil filter sources

My closest dealer's parts man told me no one was able to find oil filters locally. I found in stock oil filters at an AutoZone (STP #S9911) and Pep Boys (Pruolator #35581). They are the same filter as the VW OEM #06D 115 562 just in a different box. They even have "Germany" stamped on the end and include the rubber ring that comes with the OEM filter. The bad news is they are the same price ($14) the dealer charges. However, their location might be more convenient for some owners than going to a dealer.

Good info. Thanks. I have been ordering my filters on line from one of the VW dealers that has an internet order department. I'm not going to tell, but pricing is more interesting that what you quoted.

Why not tell for the benefit of others and for future reference??? No need to keep secrets.

$9.52 each but add $9 for shipping so it would only make sense if you order in quantity.

I did 30 years as a purchasing manager who prided himself never peddling prices. Some lessons are hard to shake off. Your price is pretty good, one way around the shipping is to buy for several friends, or order other stuff.

No worries man. The forum is just a place to help. I probably wouldn't have posted that info if I didn't see your post.

Default Wix filters

I have had good luck with the Wix filter. Well built and not to bad of a price at Fleetfilter.com
Wix part number 57187 for the 2.5 engine, I ordered a dozen at $10.25 each. A lot cheaper than my local dealer.
I seen the STP filter and it looks exactly like the OEM filter, but you are right its about $14 +. looks good.

I just did the 5000 mile oil change on my 2008 today. The filter was easy to access, but the drain plug was something else. Removing 15 fasteners to get the skid plate off is ridiculous. While I had the plate off I cut a 2.5" access hole for the plug and welded on a reinforcement ring to the plate. My next oil change will only take a few minutes.

I ended up buying a PELA extractor.

Oil pans are designed with the drain plug at the lowest point. When using the extractor how do you make sure you get all of the old oil and residue from the bottom of the pan?

Autozone carries the STP and Fram at $13. Not really sure what money you're saving when buying a dozen filters. Seems strange to store a dozen filters to save $3. It'll take years to use them and you could have kept that $100 in the bank.
