Take it into the dealer. I have the same problem with my '06. There is a TSB about this. It seems if the coolant expansion bottle is changed this problem goes away. Don't ask me why. This TSB, according to the service manager, just came out in late January or early February.
My dealer told me this part is back-ordered, so the sooner you get your NB to the dealer, the sooner the part will come in and the sooner you will have a nice warm cabin. The service manager told me there is about a 2-3 week wait for this part.

I have the same problem. It's been SO cold here, i didn't really notice it, just assumed it was due to the cold.

thanks for the tip!

Having the same problem with my 07 TW. Thought this was also due to the cold. Didn't realize it was an actual issue.

Thanks Guys!

Default Heat Fix

Had the update done 2 weeks ago. Talked to the tech. System is prone to air bubbles. New expansion tank update fixes the issue.

Picked Pearl up this week, they did a flush, due to an air pocket/bubble.

I only have 8800 miles on her, and i asked why they would need to do a flush on that low of miles. The tech said that when they filled the car, when she was produced, it was done by a machine. (?)

When They, the dealer, do a fill, they use some piece that sucks the coolet in when needed. Something about the air in the system.

Not sure, but i do notice a difference with the heat.

the only thing that makes me nervous on this..

since we didn't have hot heat at idle, doesn't that mean the engine is not getting cooled as it should? I can't imagine that is good for it.

No issues on my service, and i'm a freak when leaving my baby with someone else. She had to stay outside all night! Oh the horrors!

Good luck on getting your part Soon!!
I hear Spring is next week.

I had this happen to me last night. Today is the day John is starting the radiator replacement. Should I have a new coolant expansion bottle installed too? I thought I was just low on coolant since I have a hole somewhere.

Took our 06 VW NB Ragtop in to local dealer this morning. Can't get the car to produce any heat during morning warm-ups at idle. Asked the Planner about TSB on coolant overflow jug. He verified that the TSB existed and would contact me if they couldn't find anything else. Got a phone call mid-afternoon that they were recommending to change out the overflow jug, based on the TSB. In addition, he said our VW had the old style coolant temp sensor & they'd recommend changing that also. Don't like changing 2 things at once because if problem goes away, what fixed it!

Car certainly acts like it has a vapor lock condition going on in the cooling system. Don't see why just a proper flush & system venting wouldn't fix the issue, as reported by Ikkin earlier in this thread. Wish I could find out what's so different about the new overflow jug?

Anyway, car had just over 59k so I asked them to perform 60k servicing. I provided oil & oil filter.

Hope to get our ragtop back late today as Berta wants her VW working properly. Because if Momma ain't happy, NOBODY is happy!!

Later,

Got our 06 ragtop back this afternoon. And we've got heat!! Seems like the vapor lock condition associated with the overflow jug took care of the no heat problem.

Had the dealer change the cabin filter while the car was there today.

Bug should be ready to go for awhile now.

I've got the exact same problem as the OP here, although its not an issue of just being in idle, its whether or not you are moving.

I'f the car isn't moving, it blows ice cold. If I hit the gas while not moving, it blows ice cold. If I start moving, even 5 mph, the hot air is flowing. Thank god I'm in a warm weather area.

Anyone have any links to the TSB that addresses this?

I already took this into my dealer once, they said npf, but I'm in Florida and it was hot out when I had them check it.

They never act up when you get them to the service department! LMAO
Sounds like a sensor somewhere. Is this ditto to the defroster? What about getting heat if you have the a/c turned on? Get out the Bentley!

No clue on the defroster...not really an issue where I live.

But w/ the ac on vs off, doesn't make any difference.

No heat at all unless the car is moving. And it BARELY has to be moving. If its moving at all, the heat is just fine.

Where could you possibly live that the defroster is not an issue?

That aside, really sounds like a sensor or modulator going bad, possibly, but doubtful, a loose connection. Do you want to fix it, regardless of your need for heat or defrost? Member J.Arce will catch this post and put up a Bentley diagram, I'm betting! J...?

I'm in west-central/south Florida. I don't even know where my defroster button is.

I just found another thread here while doing yet another google search on this issue. Seems I'm definitely not the only one with this problem.

No Heat when at a stop??

There seems to be three totally different problems discussed in that thread.

No heat when the engine is cold is where some went! Duh...

Blend door issue... unrelated.

Your problem seems to be addressed most directly in Post #24. Not sure how anything in the a/c system is related to heat, but as you can get heat through the a/c system (how I always heat my vehicles, because the air is dried, and no none use of the system issues over the cooler months) I can see here the two could be related. That is where I would start.
