Default 2.5 L hp

I've been looking everywhere and noticed that Jetta's and Rabbit's have a 170 hp 2.5 but a beetle has the same engine (I assume) with only 150 hp. When the Jetta/Rabbit is chipped, it goes up to approx. 185 hp. The beetle can only get to approx. 165 hp. Can't the beetle be tuned with Jetta/Rabbit software, then aftermarket chipped to achieve the 185 hp?

Justin

Why can't we have 260 hp? The Gallardo V10 gets 520 hp, and we have half of that engine, so what the hey?!?

...well???

I would feel guilty driving a Lamborghini. I'm a die hard Ferrari fan. I wouldn't mind half the engine of the Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano. Half of that would be 310 hp! Too bad it wouldn't fit lol.

I've also posted about this same topic but got no "real" answers. Here's what I think:

1. It may be all in the electronis control unit, which affects HP, torque and engine rpm redline.

2. It may be a combination of the above and: Camshaft profile, compression, better intake breathing and maybe a better flowing exhaust.

My personal opinion is that the engine (2.5L) in our bugs is very under stressed and detuned to meet emmissions and to insure added reliability.

Someone here, preferably a VW mechanic, should be able to investigate this and post and answer.

Well if I am thinking right the rabbits didnt get 170 hp until the current 2008 model year. They were a "modest" 150 before that

I bet the 170hp 2.5L will be in the 2009 Beetle.

I think I read somewhere that the intake/manifold from the Rabbit/Jettas will not fit the Beetles' hood, which is why it's still at 150 HP.

I posted a thread a few months back about there being a 2.5L tuning article and guide in Eurotuner magazine--it had everything from intakes, exhausts, chips through turbo kits, but not a single person ever responded in months so I assumed that 2.5L peeps must not be interested in performance and deleted the thread. I give away all my magazines when I'm done with them so if you are interested now you'll have to research what month and get a back issue for all the products and supplier info.
