Castrol Syntec 5w40, or any oil that meets VW spec.

Oil filters, dealer or parts store. The parts store filters are repackaged, essentially.

Dealer is 2 hrs. away from me. They said to use 0W 40W Mobil 1European car and any good quality filter. Was worried about the warranty. Just bought this 07 with 10,000 miles.

Mobil 1 0w40 is fine, as it carries VW spec, although Castrol Syntec 5w40 is the preferred weight (and factory-fill on new VWs).

If Castrol Syntec 5w40 is factory fill then I'll go with that. Thanks.

Smile Oil Drain Plug

Changing my oil for the first time, but can't seem to locate the oil drain plug!

I found the filter and the drain plug but only about 1 pint of oil came out? I'm I doing something wrong?

Thanks
Mike

Which plug did you take off? The oil drain is on the backside of the pan.

The one under the filter! I couldn't see any other one.

Is it on the passenger side?

I think I found it? Do you need to remove the bottom shield to get to it? If so, how many bolts must be removed? I see two in the rear and others at the front plus some screws in the middle.

Could they make it any more difficult?

Thanks
Mike

OK, timing is everything. I just did my 2007 Convertible this afternoon. Yes, I am anal rententive and have bought the special VW tool for draining the oil filter housing. I also use a PELA extractor since the shield on the soft top has 15 bolts that holds it in. I understand that the hard top has a much easier to remove shield, but driving with the top down is nice.

Total time to change the oil and filter was 15 minutes from when I started the extraction to when I was starting the engine.

I only use Castrol Syntec, and yes I save my receipts, and VW filters.

This really is an easy chore to finish. Plus you know that the dolt working for JXffy Lube won't cross thread anything.

The one on the filter housing is to empty that before taking the canister off.

Find the oil pan. Drain plug is on the backside facing downward at an angle. It's centered.

Not sure why you think it's difficult to change. This has to be by far the easiest and cleanest car to change oil on.

Also make sure that you have an 8mm "triple square" male for the 6 undercarriage pan bolts. The 6 point torx will not do the job. You need a 12 point male type torx, which by the way it is not called torx... I found this out today. Cragen sells it, it's part of a kit made by Powerbuilt (#648599) Internal Wrench Set is what they call it. That's how you remove the bottom pan.
