Default 5 Spd MT really that much better, honestly?

I test drive an 06 NBC with the 6 Spd AT today, played around with it in Drive, Sport and Tiptronic. While I found the Tiptronic to be a little laggy, typical of a torque converter type transmission. I enjoyed driving the car. Felt like a bunch more power than the 03 Ford Taurus I've been driving. I'm planning on buying a 09 NB, with my mind now set on the Auto.

Convince me why I should get the manual if you feel it's that much better.

VW Spec's the Auto as only .2 seconds slower to 60 over the Manual, granted I'm sure that was with professional drivers that could shift a manual perfect every time. To me that doesn't seem like much of a difference in performance, or does that not tell the whole story.

What about a Revo chipped auto vs a stock manual, since there is a little loss in power with an auto it would be definitely made up with a chip.

Don't bother responding to this thread, I'm going to go with what I feel is right, and get the tiptronic auto, better is not gonna be a race car with the manual anyway, nor am I buying it to be one. I just want a good smooth daily driver. I do a lot of stop and go, anyway.

And when a manual transmission breaks it doesn't cost $3000 to fix it.

Automatics are...

Actually the tiptronic DSG transmission does not have a torque converter. They are reasonably stout units, (at least in comparison to the old 01M slushbox) but are horrendously expensive to fix/maintain. It costs far more than $3000 to replace one. Fluid changes are also a NECESSITY every 40k miles and are not cheap either.

Get a proper manual instead of the floppy stick.

please be very careful when discussing transmissions.

There IS no "tiptronic DSG". It's one or the other.

I think the Tiptronic is crap.
Whilist I REALLY ENJOY and wholeheartedly recommend a DSG.

Two very different transmissions.

True...there are 4 speed "tiptronic" transmissions that are not a DSG. However, in the case of this 06 6 speed...it is in fact a DSG.

I have the paperwork to my 06 and it specifically says 6 speed Tiptronic DSG. I need to find it to scan it but that's what it said. I'm talking about the manufactures sheet that is stuck to the window. This isn't something that the dealer stuck on there - it came from the plant with it stuck on there. So if it's not real, then why did they do it? I'm not the only one with this sheet - it was all the 06 TDI Beetles that I have knowledge of. I can move the selector over into a pseudo shift of the forward gears and this was called Tiptronic according to VW. If I'm incorrect, I will change my information.

I will agree the Tiptronic feature isn't that great, but I do like the DSG (even though it is more expensive to maintain/fix). Mine is pretty smooth. It suits my purposes and I'm happy. I've driven a stick for years and would still drive one if I didn't have a bum foot.

  • All autos (Tiptronic or not) are boring.
  • Plus, DSGs have scary maintenance costs!
  • Real three-pedal manuals are cheap, reliable, and FUN!
The only "automatic" transmission that's acceptable at all is the Prius' planetary gearbox, and that's because there's no concept of "shifting gears" to begin with.

The best reason for buying a car with a manual is that most car thieves can't take it. They just don't teach stick any longer.
