Does anyone have a favorite online supplier for the RED coolant for the New Beetle, or should I just pick some up from a local dealer?

A little late to do you any good, but for the benefit of others I will tell my tale.

I bought mine from German Auto Parts. They seemed to have the best price I could find.

However, I found out after I paid over $30, including shipping for two 1.5 liter bottles, that my local dealer sells it for $22.50 per gallon and a local independent VW repair shop sells it for $18 per gallon.

Online isn't always the best value. But hey...I didn't pay any sales tax.

I ended up buying a bottle of the concentrate from the local VW dealer.

How inadvisable would to be just to use Prestone or something of the sort?

VWs are made to run the G12.

If you mix G12 and other coolants, you will get sludge.

I've heard that if you do a coolant flush you can use generic stuff, but I wouldn't do it. The stuff from the dealer isn't that expensive really and unless you are seriously leaking coolant, what you buy will last you awhile.

What about diluting with water?

I don't have a problem with it at all, I just want to know just in case.

You should be putting in a 50/50 mix of coolant and water.

If you are topping off, if you don't have any G12, you can certainly add some water. But I wouldn't put a ton of water in without adding any coolant as well.

It is unadviseable to mix coolants.

I have to ask, are you the infamous Mike Hunt the author?
