Default Under engine pan

I could have sworn that when I bought Lily they told me to be sure to have there mechanics do my oil changes because the pan under the engine used 17 bolts and most "normal" mechanics wouldn't get all these bolts back in right. I took their word for it and took it back to them. Today I crawled under the car and realized the pan (that I was sure was there) was gone. I had the VW tech look at it today and he told me the car came only with the small black plastic "pan" at the top of this photo. Should an '08 NB have a larger pan under the engine? Have I lost the part or have I just lost my mind?

My 08 has a large pan that covers the oil drain plug. It's metal and extends all the way to the front. The dealer told me mine in missing a smaller pan that should cover the oil filter, maybe that's the one you have.

Thanks for the info. I'll have to go have a little chat with the dealer.

So just curious - what ever came of this? I looked at my Bentley's manual and it shows 3 different shields under the engine. And just FYI, VW calls these panels "Noise Insulation". Many folks refer to them as splash shields but thats not what they are there for - especially if you saw the one under my convertible. (lots of large open areas). Anyway, the three types are 1) Sedan-Gas 2) Sedan-Diesel 3) Convertible

For the Sedan-Gas, it doesn't look like the panel covers the whole underside. In fact, your picture is very consistent with what I am seeing in Bentley's.

I went to the local dealership and looked under all the brand new '09s (Sedan-Gas) and the pans on them are just like the small pan on my '08. I have decided the larger pan I had in my "memory" must have come from a good dream. I am now satisfied that I haven't lost any parts after all and am content again.

Thanks for asking about this. It looks like Bentley's is correct.
