The cabin air filter in in the top of the dash on the Beetle. Normally, I change these filters on my cars about once per year, as they collect dust and dirt just like your home furnace filters. If you let them go too long, you will begin to get a musty smell, mostly noted with the air conditioning.

This filter is extremely difficult to get at, as you must take apart the top of the dash, with about 15 screws and tight quarters. You can find the procedures to get at this filter if you search on the web, but I got to the point of giving up and I will ask my dealer to replace this for me, next time the car needs service.

I believe the owners manual says to replace about every two years, which I think is stretching it a bit.

Good luck if you want to take the dash apart! Changing the filter will definitely keep the air fresh, especially if you are getting musty smells.

Its not hard to take apart the dash. If you get a Bentley Manual, it tells you what you need to do.

what do you mean by what results? Are you having issues with your car you are trying to fix? Or do you just want to know how to do it?

Took me like a half hour at most. The AC doesn't stink anymore as a result. Definitely worthwhile to do.

Purchased my beetle this weekend, and just finished doing that tonight. There was some debris, but not too bad. The air smells so fresh coming out of the vents. I love it.
