Do you have a diesel? What do you mean by diesel sound?

SmileyBug: He has a convertible and lives in the United States, so he doesn't have a diesel (unless he spent an ungodly amount of money to sneak it in).

JoeCat: Can you be more specific? If your car sounds like a diesel when you start it up (valve ticking, piston slap, etc), there may be some issues.

That air pump is whats bothering me- When you start it just sounds like a diesel. Motor is perfect.

I am thinking about an exhaust change?

Can you elaborate more on the sound? Still not sure what you mean by diesel sound.

I haven't heard the 2.5L start up but I know my 2.0 sounds nothing like a diesel.

wish I was close to you. I could show you what a VW diesel sounds like. I'm sure it MAY be close, but not really. Especially with no muffler, my mom says I sound like a motorcycle when I first start off. then it's got that nice diesel idle sound....*sigh* I fall in love every time!

Well, sounding like a diesel is not how I would describe it. The 2.5 is definitely noisy when starting up - very annoying in fact. But as you know it quiets down in about 15 seconds. Yeah its that air pump - emmisions related I believe I read somewhere. I haven't read anywhere that anyone has disabled it. Probably too much effort to fix a 15 second annoyance. Plus if you disable it you could create a whole host of problems that you didn't have before. It seems, from reading all these posts on this forum and other VW forums that VW powertrains are very temperamental.

Oh, and changing you exhaust isn't going to eliminate the noise.

I think the engine revs to heat the catalytic converter up quickly. Messing with the exhaust may require extensive mods, void any warranty you still have.

Mines just stopped working for some reason. I haven't done anything special. I now have to manually rev up the engine to warm it up. When I start the NB 2007 2.5L it just goes straight to around 0700RPMS. Before it went into the 2000s RPMS and would make all the noise you guys were talking about to quickly warm up the engine.
