Exclamation 10K to first oil change

I got a 2009 Sunflower Yellow 2.5 and the dealer & manual say the first oil change is not until 10K miles. Some how this just rubs me the wrong way. I was always taught that new engines throw off shavings. Yes that is what the oil filter is for, but 10K?

What do you guys think?

I follow the researched, engineered, and recommended schedule.

I recommend you do the same.

Really think you're smarter AND more informed than their engineers who wrote the technical specs?

Stick with it, and get on the 10K oil change bandwagon. This ain't the 70's no more.

With you on this. With all the advances in oil why would anyone keep changing at 3K?

Yes new engines throw off shavings. I don't know about from the factory, but when i build an engine, i put cheap oil in it, run it for about 15 minutes at 2,500 rpms, drain the shavings and go with it. I'd guess they do the same from the factory with engines...

Some manufacturers take it a step farther. Acura puts an admonition in the RSX manual to not change the oil for the first time prior to 10K.

That's all well and good, but I cannot envision the harm caused by earlier oil changes. Part of me wonders if these extended drain intervals are not driven by environmental concerns, giving that a higher priority than longevity of the customer's engine.

My understanding is that it makes the oil lose it's viscosity so it makes some friction to seat everything for longer life (i.e. not burn oil prematurely).

Although it may not be the 70s,metal+metal=friction=wear.Screw bambi, change out the ole' dinosour juice before 10k.I use mobil oil + filter every 3-4.5k.

Money doesn't grow on trees, but I'd go 1.5k then 3k till its got 10k and stick with the regular 3-4.5k schedule.

well, according to the owner's manual...you have a change at 5,000 miles (this is the ONLY time that regular oil is to be put in AT ALL, EVER), then at 10k miles, a switch to 5w40 is made with 10k change thereon out.

i can say that this interval works, i service a 2.5 for a customer who already has 135,000 miles on a 2006.5, and tests of the used oil and compression tests indicate the motor is VERY healthy.

the 2.5 NEEDS synthetic oil, please use it.

I wondered if there wasn't a 5k change, then at 10k, 20k, 30k, etc. like the 2.0L, seems that's what the Cheat is saying--so double check your owners manual--there is a maintenance book in there. Don't risk missing that 5k change and voiding any warranties.

I have an '08. They changed oil on her at 5K, 10K and will change it again at 20K (in about 500 miles) and this all agress with my service schedule in the manual. However, I have a good friend who purchased an '09 this past fall. She recently called to schedule her 5K mile service and they informed her that they are now holding off on the first oil changes until 10K. Something seems to have changed in '09.

Default Not questioning the engineer

I am questioning the legal and advertising as well as the bean counter department at Volkswagen.

I have worked for a manufacture before, and the bean counters, advertising and legal people all have a say so in what the engineers say.
The 2007 manual for the 2.5 L engine stated the first oil change was at 5K. But the change was on your dime.

The 2009 2.5L manual states that the first oil change is not till 10K but VW pays the bill.

Some how I question why when you pay the bill, the first oil is at 5k but if vw pays it’s 10K.

Regards
Allen

Yeah,I'd do the 5k change myself,5k later,they'll pay.

Just don't tell them, they may try to push back service until 15k.

Default Oil Biddness

Auto manufacturers, part manufacturers or oil companies are all Corporations which have historically demonstrated that they are 100% self serving. You may have thought that the character Joe Isuzu created by a Madison Ave. Ad firm was a joke however, the joke was to get you to think that. Trust no corporation (or Government). Do your homework. The oil in a new car has abrasives in it to help seat some parts in the engine. If you change it early, that part of break in won't happen.

Same here. I just couldn't run the same oil for 10K--it would drive me nuts. So, the 5K, 15K, 25K, 30K, etc. would be on me and VW could buy the 10K & 20K change.

My husband who is also normally our mechanic and I are having a discussion about this very thing.

He wants to change the oil at 1k for shavings as mentioned above and a car dealership said it was not a bad idea. VW said it would be ok but thought it was unnecessary.

So, I like as much peace and harmony in my household as possible so, I think we're going with what makes my husband happy.

So, his question was how to change the oil filter. I searched and didn't find any pictures.
