Default repair shop charges $400 for some wire harness problem, overcharged?

Hi all, my 06 new beetle 2.5 just got a service engine light on. Since I got a bad experience at the local VW dealer, I took the car to another repair shop. they scanned it and told me some sort of wire harness has a problem, and if I took the car to the dealer they probably will replace the whole wire harness for about 1000 dollars. However they can fix the wire harness by doing some soldering work and that reduces the total cost to about $400. I'm a half electrician myself and it sounds expensive to solder something and charges $400. Don't you think so?

Do you know what the code was that they pulled from the car? If they are using a generic code reader, its possible that it is pointing them in the wrong direction for a fix.

x2 on trying to see if you can figure out what code was being thrown, it could lead to a fairly simple and inexpensive DIY repair.
