Default Pre Fill of Oil Filter Housing

Just found a web site (oil change without the OEM drain tool) suggested pre-filling the oil filter housing so that when the engine is started new oil is pumped immediately into the engine. Has anyone does this or does it need to be done? Sounds plausible to me.

I was actually searching for the special oil filter drain adapter when I found this little tidbit. Also, as stated in another post, the special tool isn't really needed, just carefully push the orange plug/seal in and to one side with a blunt end tool. When oil is drained just move it back in place.

I always pre-fill my filters during an oil change. canister style or not.

Ditto.

It's prolly only a couple seconds or so, but that's moving parts with no oil pressure and it is relatively easy to pre-fill.

I've been doing this for years. (since the 70's) It is a good practice to do. Will it kill your engine if you don;t do it? No. But your rod bearings are going to bear the brunt of a "dry start". And you run a risk of eventually developing a "rod knock" upon starting after sitting for a long time.

When I was into Merkur XR4Ti's (I owned 3 at one time), I used to remove the coil wire from the distributor and cranked the engine a few times. (Note: Ford actually recommended that in the oil change procedure.) That pumped oil over to the turbo, which was critical to prevent accelerated bearing wear on the shaft. Then I reconnected the coil wire and started the car to check for any leaks. Never had any issues.

I have a 1.8T (and realize that this is the 2.5 forum), but I definitely heard a crunchy, metal-on-metal sound briefly when I started up after my last oil change.
So, are you saying that filling the oil filter first will prevent this?

It is a wise thing to do... Anytime you drain the oil,it takes a few seconds to pump the oil through the system when started... You might also try a MAN big filter # W940-25.... Works for 1.8t's and 2 liters not sure about the 2.5 though.
