simonsi: Obviously you have never changed the oil filter in a 2.5L engine. The 2.5L engines use an element oil filter with a filter housing. No screw ons here. If the filter housing isn't drained prior to removing, much oil will flow out of the housing and just make one big mess! Most folks just use a blunt end tool to open the drain port/valve at the bottom of the filter housing and let it drain. I used a funnel to direct the oil to a catch pan.
This tool, although still expensive at this price for what it is, but is about half the cost of metal tools and should be just as good. I found this site as I was looking for a cheaper tool. I make no claim for the tool or the seller. |

I have a problem:
Changed the oil for the first time in my 2006 2.5 last weekend and everything went as planed... (thanks to these forums) except I can't remove the filter housing. I effortlessly removed the drain cap on the oil filter housing, pushed up the orange nipple to drain the oil out of the housing, but I can't get the damn housing off. I've tried oil filter wrenches, both kinds. The ones with the self tightening metal ring and handle don't work because there's not enough space under the car/around the housing to spin the handle around. The metal 'cap-shaped' 'wrenches' from Advanced Auto parts/Wal-Mart/Local Parts store don't work either. I found a thread that said the 73mm cap/wrench tool is the correct size but that one won't fit around the housing. I bought the next size up and that one was too big. So what have you guys used to remove the oil filter housing? |

I found some weirdly shaped tool online... is this what everyone's using to get off the oil filter housing?

The first time that I changed the oil on this 2007 NB2.5 I had a heck of a time since the filter and the drain plug where beyond tight. I used the cup type of filter wrench and when the filter finally came loose the wrench was stuck on the bottom so tight that I had to place it in a vise and turn the housing with a strap type filter wrench to break it free.
Today I changed the oil again and this time I had no problem at all with the filter or the drain plug. Amazing how easy things are when some idiot hasn't torqued them till the threads smoked. Also, I use a steel rod that's bent slightly to depress the filter drain valve. With the A/C hose pushed up to catch on the filter housing the oil runs right out to the drain pan. I had thought about making a drain adapter on the lathe but don't see the need with this method. And unlike a screwdriver I don't have to worry about slipping off the valve or the oil running down the shaft and all over the place. |
