To my knowledge, the 2.5 runs perfectly fine on regular gas. The only beetle that REQUIRES premium gas is the 1.8T. If anyone has other thoughts, feel free to post. I don't know a whole bunch about the 2.5.

Octane is defined as a fuel's resistance to knocking. There is no benefit if the octane is higher than what the engine needs. Engine knock occurs when fuel in a combustion chamber ignites before it should. This disrupts the engine's operation.
Using premium when regular is “recommended” is basically just throwing your money away.
