Default Regular or Premium Gas

On my 2010 Red Rock edition the filler cap shows use regular but in the manual it states for best performance use premium. What gives.

To my knowledge, the 2.5 runs perfectly fine on regular gas. The only beetle that REQUIRES premium gas is the 1.8T. If anyone has other thoughts, feel free to post. I don't know a whole bunch about the 2.5.

The 2.5 runs on Regular. A Search would reveal several threads on this subject.

Premium would allegedly provide a bit more power and mileage, but for the extra per-gallon price, I don't see any difference, or advantage. I ran several tankfuls of premium when I first got it, mainly out of habit (the '03 1.8T and the BMWs all run on Premium, so I was used to just pushing that button choice) but I never noticed any deterioration of performance or mileage when I switched to regular on a regular basis.

Save yourself the bucks and run Regular...,,

Octane is defined as a fuel's resistance to knocking. There is no benefit if the octane is higher than what the engine needs. Engine knock occurs when fuel in a combustion chamber ignites before it should. This disrupts the engine's operation.

Using premium when regular is “recommended” is basically just throwing your money away.

I get better gas mileage when I use premium it seems like it works out about the same price-wise so I use premium. Less time at the pump for me.
